Statewide efforts seeks support for economic recovery plan
Amid a worsening economic recession that has left nearly two million Americans without jobs and more than 2.5 million more without homes, advocacy groups, community leaders and struggling out-of-work Florida families will gather at three locations statewide on Thursday, Dec. 18 for the Florida launch of the ‘Jobs and Economic Recovery Now' campaign as part of a national, coalitional effort urging members of Congress to support President-Elect Barack Obama's call for a major economic recovery and jobs creation package.
Poverty drops, but a slowing economy likely to expand numbers of poor in Florida
Poverty declined in Florida from to 12.5 percent in 2001 to 12.1 percent in 2007, according to data released today by the Census Bureau. But a slumping economy, growing unemployment and a regressive tax policy that have all taken affect since January jeopardize Florida's gains.
